Young Investigator Award - Oetliker Prize

 


Supported by the Hans Oetliker Foundation (former Asher-Hess Contest)

 

 

The Young Investigator Award takes place yearly at the Meeting of the Swiss Physiological Society.

 

The next will be on September 13, 2012 in Fribourg.

 

 

Registration and abstract submission will be possible from June 15 to July 15, 2012

 

 

Criteria for the Young Investigator Award participation

 

General:

  • Only student members (see definition under „Membership“) of the Swiss Physiological Society may participate in the contest
  • Participants shall be employed in Switzerland
  • In the registration form you may indicate which format you prefer, poster or oral presentation. Due to organizational constraints, your presentation may be scheduled for a different format, but your wishes will be followed whenever possible.

 

Abstract Content:

  • The abstract should be understandable for non-specialists.
  • General physiological relevance of the work should be emphasized.
  • Methods should be discussed only where required for understanding the work. .

Participants in the Young Investigator Award should register for the meeting prior to abstract submission.

 

 

Abstract format:

 

The abstracts will be reduced for printing to allow printing of 4 abstracts per page.
Please, limit the TOTAL number of characters (Title + authors + affiliation + abstract text) to 2800 (including spaces).


Title, authors and affiliation field lenghts are limited to 255 characters each (including spaces).No special characters nor superscript/subscript are allowed.


If figures or tables are included, the entire abstract should fit within a rectangle 15 x 19 cm (W x H) in a Word document written with the Times New Roman font, size 12.
The abstract not fulfilling the above formatting criteria will not be considered for the competition.

 

Abstracts will not be published online.



Assessment:

  • Each abstract will be read by the jury members which will attribute 0-10 points. Eight abstracts with the highest mean number of points will be selected for oral presentation.
  • The number of points attributed for the abstract will count as 50 % for the final score
  •  The average mark based on the criteria for oral presentation (see below) brings another 50 % to the final score.

 

 

Presentation:

 

Poster:

A 5 min blitz presentation (including discussion) will be given for the full audience (Power point). The posters can be visited during the lunch break.

 

Oral presentation:

Duration: 10 min presentation + 5 min discussion


Criteria that will be taken in consideration by the jury:

  • Quality of content
  • Systematics of the presentation
  • Clarity of expression
  • Respect for time limits
  • Communication skills with the audience
  • Quality of slides / tables / graphs
  • Quality of replies to questions

 

 


Prizes:

1st prize  Oral presentation: 1400.- as travel grant plus Fr. 1200.- for private usage

2nd prize Oral presentation: Fr. 1400.- as travel grant plus Fr. 800.- for private usage

3rd prize Oral presentation: 1400.- as travel grant plus Fr. 400.- for private usage

Poster prize: 1400.- as travel grant plus Fr. 600.- for private usage
